According to the US Census Bureau, Putnam is the only county in the region to consistently record population growth every year since 1970. Healthcare

Putnam County residents enjoy convenient access to cutting edge advanced healthcare and this is reflected in favorable health outcomes for county residents. Six hospitals, including several university teaching facilities are located within a 30-minute drive and there are an abundance of health care providers of all specialties.

CAMC Teays Valley Hospital, located in Hurricane, WV, is a non-profit, 70-bed hospital. More than 100 doctors have privileges to practice at the hospital and along with nearly 400 nurses and non-clinical staff, provide the highest quality care to the residents of Putnam County and surrounding areas.

As part of the CAMC Health System, the Putnam County facility has access to the resources of a nonprofit, 956-bed, regional referral and academic medical center with more than 6,000 employees. In addition to the Putnam County facility, CAMC Health System is made up of three additional hospitals: CAMC General Hospital, CAMC Memorial Hospital and CAMC Women and Children's Hospital. The system is home to one of the largest heart programs in the United States; the only kidney transplant center in West Virginia; the highest level trauma center; and the only freestanding children's hospital in the state. All medical services are supported by primary care physicians throughout the region who regularly treat their patients at CAMC hospitals or refer them to CAMC for specialty consultation and treatment.

In 2017 The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute released health numbers, based on 30 factors, for almost every county in the United States. Putnam County was ranked second healthiest in the state of West Virginia. Among the factors used to determine overall county health were poverty, education, transportation, housing and jobs in the rankings which have been released annually for the past eight years.

In 2017 Marshall Health opened its doors to a new 51,000-square-foot clinical facility in the county. The new facility consolidates Marshall Health's existing internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatric offices in Putnam County under one roof. Orthopedics, sports medicine, on-site imaging (x-ray) and laboratory services are among the expanded offerings now available in Teays Valley.

Recreation Opportunities

The 60 acre Valley Park includes Waves of Fun Water Park, Valley Park Community Center, an 18-Hole mini golf course, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a beach volley ball court, Hernshaw Soccer Field, numerous multi-purpose fields, fishing ponds, miles of walking trails, an outdoor amphitheater, a seasonal synthetic ice rink, numerous picnic shelters, and a fenced-in dog park.

In 2016, community leaders undertook a $15 million, two-phase renovation of Valley Park. Phase I overhauls will include updating several recreational areas; converting the baseball, softball and soccer fields from grass to turf surfaces and repurposing them to regulation sizes for tournament play; and constructing a new, all-inclusive playground. Completion on the first phase is anticipated for fall 2017.

Putnam County Schools has 23 schools serving approximately 9,800 students. These schools include three National Blue Ribbon Schools, 16 West Virginia Schools of Excellence, one National Title I Distinguished School, and one Premier Career and Technical Center.
