PCDA WELCOMES RUSSIAN VISITORS

March 2, 2001 - How do you generate excitement among Russian visitors? That's easy to answer, just loan a golf club and a ball. In the photo at right, one of the local government officials from Russia strike a "Tiger Woods" pose for the cameras at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.

The Putnam County Development Authority, Inc. served as host to eleven (11) Russian local government officials Thursday afternoon (Mar. 1) during their first-ever visit to Putnam County. The visitors are sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the training program has been designed and implemented by the Center for International Understanding at Bluefield State College.

The Development Authority's Executive Director, Gary Walton, and PCDA President Wayne Bennett acted as hosts for a tour of the new Putnam Business Park and Eleanor Industrial Park in the county.

In the photo (left), the guests asked the Translator to interpret a question for PCDA's Executive Director Gary Walton during a presentation about the Authority and its efforts to expand existing industry and to develop new industrial sites in the county. The visitors arrived in Putnam County at about 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 and after the presentation, were given a brief tour of Putnam County.

In the photo at right, PCDA's 2001 President Wayne Bennett explains the Authority's efforts to develop the new Putnam Business Park. The photo was taken on-site at the new business park site. A new industrial access road will be constructed just behind where the guests are standing. Gary Walton, Executive Director, said that "we welcome the opportunity to host international visitors and hope this visit will bring about a better understanding and lasting relationship for our Russian visitors."

"It was an exciting visit although too short," according to Walton, "I would have preferred to have much more time to ask more questions about life in general - and economic development in particular - of our guests" Walton concluded.
