September 8, 2000 - It is not uncommon to see Archeologists digging and sifting on the Putnam Business Park property this week as they continue to work on the Phase I Archeological site review at the site of the county's newest business park. Michael Anslinger, RPA, Principal Investigator with Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. of Hurricane told PCDA's executive director , Gary Walton that the archeologists expect to complete the preliminary site review this week.
The previously identified mound sites are expected to be further investigated Monday and Tuesday of next week (9/11-9/12). Questions concerning the methodology and extent of investigations can be obtained by contacting Mr. Anslinger at (304) 562-7233.
In recent days, the Development Authority has had areas of the property plowed for easier access by investigators. Walton continues, "we are cooperating with Margaret Crawford of the Native American Council of West Virginia, and have forwarded information to representatives of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee for their input." "Our goal is to take every precaution to assure that any cultural or historic resources on the site are protected to the best of our ability," Walton concluded.
