Education
Five colleges and universities serve the Putnam County area offering
quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs. These are Marshall
University, West Virginia State College, Marshall University College
of Graduate Studies, West Virginia University Institute of Technology
and the University of Charleston. In addition to the dozens of public
elementary, middle, junior high and high schools in the area, there
are several vocational-technical schools, an adult career center, an
alternative high school, a special education school , the International
School at Scott Teays Elementary and many parochial and private elementary
and secondary schools. Throughout the area, students consistently score
above the state averages on total basic skills tests.
